Ultimate Guide: Global Entry at Chicago O'Hare International

Next appointment in 4 days

If you're applying for Global Entry and hoping to interview in Chicago, the O'Hare International Airport Enrollment Center is one of the busiest — and most convenient — options in the Midwest. Located inside Terminal 5, it's the go-to interview site not just for Chicago residents, but for travelers throughout the surrounding suburbs like Rosemont, Des Plaines, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Park Ridge, and Arlington Heights, as well as applicants from across northern Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan who can't find open slots closer to home. Because it's built into an active international terminal, this enrollment center handles a high volume of interviews, which means slots open and close fast — but also that cancellations pop up more frequently than at smaller centers.

No available appointments at Chicago O'Hare International?

Hundreds of savvy travelers have skipped the long wait by using tools like Snapslot, which sends real-time SMS alerts when cancellations open up new appointment slots. With limited availability at O'Hare's Terminal 5 Enrollment Center, a tool like this can help you lock in an interview far sooner than refreshing the Trusted Traveler Programs website manually.

Knowing the Global Entry Application Process

  1. Submit Your ApplicationThe first step to obtaining Global Entry is to submit an online application through the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website. Ensure you provide accurate information and complete all required fields. The application includes personal information, passport details, employment history, and travel history.

  2. Await Conditional ApprovalAfter submitting your application, CBP will review it to determine your eligibility for Global Entry. If your application is conditionally approved, you'll receive a notification via your TTP account. This approval does not guarantee enrollment but indicates that you have met the initial criteria.

  3. Schedule Your InterviewThis is the tough part. Once conditionally approved, log in to your TTP account to schedule your Global Entry interview. You'll need to select a convenient enrollment center and appointment time. Interview locations vary, with many available at major airports and other designated sites across the country. It's essential to schedule your interview as soon as possible to secure your preferred date and time. Appointment slots fill up quickly, but Snapslot.co can help you secure a cancellation.

  4. Attend Your InterviewShow up prepared with your passport, conditional approval letter, and other required documents.

  5. Await Final ApprovalAfter your interview, final approval typically arrives within a few days though some have reported months!

Preparing for your interview

Getting ready for your interview is crucial. Here's what you may need (refer to official notes for a complete list):

  • A valid passport and another form of ID (e.g., driver’s license).

  • Conditional approval letter from the Trusted Traveler Program.

  • A list of countries you’ve visited in the past five years (if asked). The agent may ask you the reason for the visit, how long you went for, etc. It’s mostly an honesty check, but be prepared to answer those questions.

Pro tip: Dress professionally, and be prepared to answer questions about your travel habits and purpose for applying.

Getting to your appointment

Parking at O'Hare Terminal 5

Short-term public parking is available directly across from Terminal 5, and it's the closest option for your Global Entry appointment. If the Terminal 5 lot is full, park at Terminal 3 and take the free Airport Transit System (ATS) tram over to Terminal 5, then head down to the Lower Level. Budget extra time for parking and walking, since Terminal 5 handles international arrivals and can get congested, especially around midday.Taking Public Transit to Chicago O'Hare International for your appointment

Taking Public Transit to O'Hare for your appointment

O'Hare is served directly by the CTA Blue Line, which runs 24 hours a day between downtown Chicago and the airport. The Blue Line's O'Hare station connects to the main terminal complex, from which you can use the free ATS tram to reach Terminal 5. Once at Terminal 5, follow signs down to the Lower Level (Arrivals) to reach the Enrollment Center. This is often the most predictable way to arrive if you're coming from within the city, since it avoids potential parking delays or traffic on the Kennedy Expressway.

If you're coming from nearby suburbs like Rosemont, Schaumburg, or Naperville, driving or using rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft may be more reliable than public transit, especially outside of peak Blue Line service hours.

No available appointments?

If you're struggling to find an open slot at O'Hare, try these options:

Enrollment on Arrival: If you're flying internationally and landing at O'Hare, you may be able to complete your Global Entry interview on the spot after clearing customs, without a scheduled appointment. This is one of O'Hare's biggest advantages as an interview location — but availability and hours can vary, so it's worth checking current CBP guidance before you count on it.

Pro Tip: Follow signs to "Global Entry" after passing security or baggage claim if returning internationally.

Manual refreshing: Keep checking the TTP site frequently — slots often appear without warning, especially due to last-minute cancellations, and are typically taken within minutes.

Set up alerts: Snapslot can do the work for you, sending SMS alerts as soon as a new slot opens at O'Hare or nearby enrollment centers, so you don't have to babysit the booking page.

A few gotchas to know before you go:

  • O'Hare's Enrollment Center is inside Terminal 5, the international terminal — if you're used to O'Hare's domestic terminals, give yourself extra time to navigate over via the ATS tram.

  • Some travelers have described the customs and arrivals area near the Enrollment Center as busy or under construction at times, which can make it harder to find your way — follow the posted Global Entry signage past the McDonald's rather than relying on memory from a previous visit.

  • Bring both your passport and a secondary photo ID; missing either can mean rescheduling your interview entirely.

  • If you have family members applying together, each person needs their own individually scheduled appointment — appointments can't be booked as a group under one account.

The Global Entry Enrollment Center at O'Hare is located in Terminal 5, near the U.S. Customs area.
